October 8, 2015: India is currently facing the challenges of dengue. In ayurveda, the ailment is called ?Pittaja Jvara?. There are not only a number of ayurveda medicines for dengue, home remedies can also be helpful.

The dengue virus directly impact the production of blood platelets. Dengue patients usually lose their platelet count from 1.5 lakh platelets per micro litre of blood to less than one lakh. According to experts, before even the term dengue was known, the ailment was defined ayurvedic literature.

?There are about 35 ayurvedic drugs that are highly effective in its management. The quality, composition and dosage of these drugs to be administered to patients are clearly defined in literature. The challenge, however, is finding a reliable Ayurvedic doctor and not quacks,? says Vice-Chair (Education), Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM), S Sarangapani.

The Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), Ministry of AYUSH, has released the list of 35 drugs and guidelines that the ayurvedic practitioners need to follow for clinical management of dengue. AYUSH has suggested prescribing any of the anti-pyeretic formulations for fever and dehydration.

?In Ayurveda, the whole body is seen as one unit and a holistic approach is taken towards treating the ailment,? Dr Sargapani said.

Experts in Ayurveda also say that extracts from Papaya leaves are beneficial for people suffering from dengue. A research in this field has shown the use of papaya in managing dengue patients and not treating them.
