Eating flavonoid-rich fruits and veggies aid in weight management

July 14, 2017: According to a study published in The BMJ, eating flavonoid-rich fruits and veggies aid in weight management. This means that it is time to include foods such as berries, apples, onions, pears etc so as to stay fit and healthy while avoiding the unwanted fat piling up on your body.

The highlights of the study

There are over 6,000 kinds of flavonoids that are present in a number of fruits and veggies. The most important ones are flavanones, anthocyanins, flavones and flavonols.

Previously studies have shown that dietary flavonoids help you lose weight; however the team concerned with this most recent study notes that majority of the investigation is about the effect of weight loss on flavan-3-ol which is a flavonoid present in organic green tea.

The research head Monica L. Bertoia from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Boston said majority of the previous researches evaluating the connection between weight loss and dietary flavonoids have merely incorporated small groups of overweight people.

This study set out to evaluate as to how consumption of 7 types of flavonoids showed effects on weight of around 124,086 people both men and women between the ages of 27 to 65.

Every 4 years, these people were asked to answer some dietary questionnaire from which the investigators evaluated their consumption of anthocyanins, flavonoid polymers, flavanones, proanthocyanidins, flavan-3-ols, flavones and flavonols.

The weight, lifestyle habits and past cases of illnesses of all the participants were evaluated via a questionnaire completed after every two years.

Findings of the study

The findings of the study suggested that those who increased their inatje of specific types of flavonoid such as flavonoid polymer, flavan-3-ols, flavonols, and anthocyanins were less likely to gain weight as compared to those who didn?t consume such flavonoids.

These flavonoids were linked with least weight gain; each extra 138 mg of flavonoid polymers, 7 mg of flavonols and 10 mg of anthocyanins eaten on an everyday basis were linked with 0.16-0.23 Ibs reduced weight gained every 4 years.

Such findings remained after being accountable for perplexing factors such as smoking habits, physical habits and also dietary factor of all the participants.

The major sources of anthocyanins were found to be blueberries and strawberries while for flavonols, it was onions and green tea. For, flavan-3-ols sources included apples and tea.

The researchers noted that the findings are observational which means that no specific conclusion can be drawn. Nonetheless, they opined that the findings may help in fighting the existing obesity outbreak by providing direction as to which fruits and veggies aid in weight loss or weight management as a whole.
