Dec 2, 2015: Prisoners at Yerwada jail in Pune India are eligible to receive early release provided they pass yoga test with good marks. This is the same prison where Mahatma Gandhi, the great freedom fighter of the nation was imprisoned twice.
Yerwada prison is already well-known for its history of unique rehabilitation program where Gandhian principles were taught to prisoners.
The inmates have to undergo a course and obtain excellent marks in yoga to stand eligible for release 3 months prior to their said imprisonment. The prisoners have to sit for a practical test and a written one will also be conducted.
The prison director Bhushan Kumar Upadhay said, ?Yoga has been proved scientifically to improve the mental and physical condition. It improves our overall behaviour and calms down our violent tendencies.Remission have been given by the government for good conduct. So as an incentive we are going to give remission to those who excel at yoga.?
Upadhay is hopeful that the programme where 1500 prisoners will be participating will spread across the nation and overseas as well. Inmates will not only get to learn yoga poses but will also be encouraged to teach yogic principles to fellow prisoners at other prisons in and around the state of Maharashtra.
Besides obtaining good marks at yoga early release will also depend on other factors such as their overall conduct and involvement in employment schemes.
