Fight depression with 5 herbal remedies

Mar 21, 2017: Depression is fast becoming lifestyle problem with many suffering from symptoms like anxiety, stress and insomnia. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), depression is a common health disorder worldwide.

There are some ayurvedic herbs that can help during depression and its different symptoms. According to Dr Ashutosh Gautam, Clinical Operations and Coordination Manager, Baidyanath, “During depression, the feel good hormones are not competent enough to handle difficult situations, hence, you feel mood swings. Some ayurvedic herbs and spices have proved to help reduce the symptoms of depression.”

Here are some herbal remedies for depression

Ashwangandha

Ashwangnadha is said to relieve stress and anxiety as it consists of active compounds like steroidal lactones, saponins, alkaloids and withanolides that help in reducing stress caused by emotional and physical fatigue. These compounds also help treat mood swings and increases mental alertness.

Brahmi

Brahmi herb can cure stress as it acts like an adaptogen, which helps the body to adapt to stressful situations. Brahmi can increase the serotonin levels in the brain that help to keep the mind calm and give relief from anxiety and nervousness.

Jatamansi (Spikenard)

Jatamansi herb helps cure insomnia and other sleeping disorders. It has anti-depressant, anti-stress and anti-fatigue properties. It can treat mood swings and stress disorders.

Pudina (Peppermint)

Pudina or peppermint can cure nervous system disorders as it has menthol that calms frazzled nerves and has a cooling effect. It consists of vitamin A and C, magnesium, manganese, calcium, iron, folate, copper and potassium. Menthol helps cure insomnia and keeps the mind calm.

Maca (Peruvian Ginseng)
