Dec 11. 2015: In a shocking statement the health minister of India JP Nadda confirmed that India is falling prey to mental disorders in a rapid manner.
Nadda said that over 6% of the country?s population has been hit by some mental disorders or the other such as anxiety, schizophrenia and even depression.
Back in the year 2002 cases of around 20 million people (1-2%) suffering from severe mental issues such as bipolar disturbances and schizophrenia was reported by the National Commission on Macroeconomic and Health. The department had also reported around 50 million population (5%) suffering from psychological disorders such as anxiety and depression.
Further the minister said that there were 3 mental health instates run by the central, 40 run by state hospitals and 398 departments of psychiatry in a number of medical colleges (215 in private and 183 in government) all over the nation to cure people who suffered from mental disorders including schizophrenia both in urban as well as rural parts of the country.
He said, “The government is also implementing the District Mental Health Programme (DMHP) in 241 districts in all the 36 states/UTs. Activities under DMHP include school and college counselling services, work place stress management and suicide prevention and community outreach activities.?
