July 14, 2017: If you are one of those trying to lose weight, then laugh as much possible. Yes, a recent study has confirmed laughter is the best weight loss secret. So, laugh it off and shed off those extra pounds to lead a confident and healthy lifestyle.
The study says that when you laugh while watching your favorite funny sitcom, you actually burn a lot of calories which is equal to medium-paced walking.
The ‘funny’ study
Dr Timandra Harkness and Helen Pilcher were commissioned by the television channel Dave to carry out the study. The outcome of the study discloses that bursting into unmanageable fits of laughter can burn as much as 120 calories an hour.
This is not the primary study which has shown that laughter affects your body. There have been a number of studies conducted previously that show the connection between laughter and weight loss.
Way back in 2007, a study found headed by Dr. Maciej Buchowski said that laughing for 15 minutes a day can burn up to 40 calories. Another study exposed that laughing advances the circulation of blood within the body providing the person a beneficial heart exercise.
The findings of this latest study reflect that a good laugh activates the interior oblique muscles thus, making them all the more active. Pilcher said in a statement,?This report raises the joyous possibility that watching comedy shows can help you to shape your six pack by targeting internal oblique muscles more effectively than sit-ups. I definitely felt more toned after watching hours of TV comedies.?
Categories of laughter
The researchers at the Comedy Research Project have come up with five categories of laughter. These are
- Howler – recognized as irrepressible fits of laughter, this type of laughter helps to burn as much as 120 calories an hour.
- Belly buster – a succession of hearty laughs capable of burning 100 calories an hour.
- Giggle ? you can lose up to 33 calories per hour.
- Chuckle ? you can lose up to 20 calories per hour.
- Snigger ? this kind of laughter helps to burn about 10 calories an hour
Taking it a step further, the researchers have worked out weight loss programs which consist of reps of laughter.
One such program is labeled as ‘The Hyena.’ According to the UK news source, this program involves a mixture of giggling and chuckling, belly laughs along with howling sessions.
The other program is referred to as Shape up for spring cleaning. It is being said that the program will include a succession of household chores that could be done while watching comedy shows.
Dr Harkness, the co-author of the study said on the New Zealand Herald report, ?Laughter is no replacement for going to the gym. But let’s face it, it’s a much more inviting prospect on a wet, chilly winter evening.?
